Inversions

This time were discussing chord inversions. Inversions can alter the sound of a chord without changing the notes contained in the chord. Primarily used as a technique to keep from having to jump as far to play the next chord, Inversions are also used to allow the highest note to be in the melody or to avoid a clash with another instrument. Inversions are also the first steps to creating more complex chord voicings. If we have a three note chord called a triad we would have three possible ways to “voice” this chord. Root position is the starting point for a triad played with the lowest note being the note that the chord is named for. So a C Major triad would have C-E-G. First inversion is then E-G-C and finally second inversion would be G-C-E.
