What’s happening theory buffs? This time we look at tempo variances. In this one they alter the tempo of the melody by using a technique called half time. Half time as well as double time are two ways to keep a listener interested without adding additional melodic content. In Derek minor’s “clean” the melody starts with eighth notes at the intro and continues through the hook. When the verse picks up we hear quarter notes. The melody does change slightly but the effect is there none the less. For more on these techniques check out the you tube video.
